REVIEW

INTRODUCTION
Cross Conferences' latest Asian Cash Handling Seminar and High Security Printing Conference was held in the dramatic setting of the Millennium Hilton Hotel, overlooking the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. Over 3 days, delegates heard presentations from specialists in the field of Cash Handling, High Security Printing, E-Passports and ID Innovations, while browsing an Exhibition representing the leading suppliers to the Industry. The total number of attendees was 295, including 59 Central Banks and Government Security Printers and a further 23 from Commercial Security Printers and Government Security Organisations. Delegates from 36 different countries attended the Conference and once again, Cross Conferences is confirmed as the premier regional High Security Printing Conference in Asia with 52%% Asian/Australasian organisations attending.

SEMINAR AND PROGRAMME
A Welcome Address to the 105 Cash Handling Seminar delegates was made by Dr Nopporn Pramojaney, Managing Director of the Bank of Thailand Note Printing Works, after which the 3rd Asia Cash Handling Seminar was formally opened by Colin Cross, from Cross Group, who welcomed everyone to the event at the Bangkok Millennium Hotel.

Everyone present was most impressed by the first Speaker, Mr Ed Grondahl of Tidel Engineering, whose talk was 'Eliminate Cash Shrinkage' which covered automated safe operations in the multinational “7-11” chain of retail outlets. Speakers who followed included the Bank of Thailand, an ex-member of the Reserve Bank of India, Bank of Indonesia, Marsh (UK), G4S Asia Pacific, De La Rue (UK), Certis CISCO (Singapore), Mahmood Security (Malaysia), Sargent & Greenleaf (USA) and Mint and Treasury Supply Company (UK).

Throughout the 3 days of the Cash Handling Seminar and the High Security Printing Conference delegates were free to browse at the booths of the 35 sponsor and exhibiting organisations, including those of the Sponsors from OVD Kinegram, Digital Identification Solutions and Kodak.

After the close of the first day, delegates attending the Cash Handling Seminar were joined by the High Security Printing Conference delegates at the Welcome Cocktail Reception, sponsored by OVD Kinegram. (All delegates received a personalised security badge prepared using the latest hardware and software from Digital Identification Solutions).

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
Mrs Nitaya Pibulratanagit, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Thailand gave the Welcome Address to the Conference delegates on the first morning of the Conference. Neville Barnes, from BSC International, then formally opened the High Security Printing Conference, on behalf of Cross Group and BSC International, before the first session of the day entitled “Regional Developments in High Security Printing and Papermaking”. The Conference then commenced with technical papers from Bank of Thailand Printing Works, Goznak (Russia), Bank of Korea and Thai British Security Printing. After a break for morning coffee, Colin Cross took up the Chairmanship for papers from National Printing Bureau (Japan), Kodak (Singapore), InterCrim Press, (Russia) and Wesby Associates (UK).

Following an excellent buffet lunch on the banks of the river, Mr John Field took up the Chair for papers from NanoMatriX International (Hong Kong), Joh Enschede (The Netherlands), Thai Government Lottery Office, Tema (Germany) and Atlantic Zeiser (Germany).

In the evening attendees overcame the infamous Bangkok traffic jams, with the help of a police escort, en route to the Gala Dinner at the Siam Niramit traditional village and theatre. A performing elephant and dancers took the attention of delegates before moving on to snacks and pre-show drinks. The show itself was an extravaganza of choreographed dance depicting the history of Thailand and regional cultures. After the show delegates enjoyed a sumptuous buffet dinner and wandered through the outdoor cultural museum, and then participated in the annual Loi Krathong festivities by launching a flower boat on the nearby lake.

The second day of the Conference was chaired by Ms Astrid Mitchell for the session “E-Passport-ID Innovations”, which introduced presentations from Hologram Industries (France), Infineon Technologies (Germany) and Digital Identification Solutions (Germany). After the coffee break, Mr Gerd Schafer took over the chair and introduced presentations from Giesecke & Devrient (Germany) IDcentrix (USA) and OVD Kinegram (Switzerland).

Lunch time provided delegates a further opportunity to visit the Exhibition, which was one of the largest held in the region by Cross Conferences. The first half of the afternoon session was chaired by Neville Barnes, with papers from Datacard (Hong Kong) and De La Rue Security Papers UK.

After a mid-afternoon break, Colin Cross joined Neville Barnes to introduce papers from the Security Printing Alliance (Jura/Parvis), Roymal (USA) and the Gianasso Graphic Group. After thanking all the hotel staff who helped to make the Conference such a success, delegates where reminded that the 6th Pan European High Security Printing Conference will be held in Warsaw on 1-2 April 2009. (Both past Pan European Conferences in Budapest and Prague were over-subscribed, so delegates were advised to register early.) The delegates then retired to the exhibition area for farewell drinks and a final opportunity to view the exhibition and network with their colleagues.

On Friday, approximately 150 delegates boarded coaches to visit the Bank of Thailand Banknote Printing Works. Dr Nopporn Pramojaney welcomed the delegates to the Bank of Thailand Note Printing Works before the delegates were divided into different groups for the actual tour. After the tour, the Bank of Thailand provided light refreshments, the opportunity to ask questions and network, plus purchase mementoes.

Cross Conferences – yet another Successful Conference, with the largest number of delegates in the Asian Region.
